DSU Women’s Basketball Eager for New Season

The Dakota State women’s basketball team recently finished up their second week of official practice. The team has been itching to get on the court and get thing going. After a rough season last year, the girls are eager to turn things around.

The team actually began practice on the first day of classes, but only for a week. The goal of this was to introduce the offense and defense to freshman and newcomers. That way these things could be worked on throughout the pre-season. The whole pre-season lasted for four weeks and consisted of weights, conditioning, and open gym a couple of days a week. It was a tough four weeks of training for the girls, and the team has been restlessly awaiting the start of a new season.

Last year’s season was a long and tough one for the Trojan women. After battling numerous injuries, the team was only able to pull away with four wins. Coming into this year things look much brighter. There is a solid group of players coming back that now have more experienc playing at the college level. Sophomore point guard Lexi Robson said, “Last season we got thrown into the fire a little, but with a year under our belts we are ready to go.” The girls now know what it takes to win and their ready to prove their naysayers wrong.

Head Coach David Moe likes the way his team is looking. “There is a good group of girls who do things the right way on and off the court,” he said. There is still a couple of weeks until the first game, but the season is quickly approaching. He noted that it will be key for the girls to stay focused in order to be ready to go for the first game. The team will face the Jamestown Jimmies on October 26th to ring in the new season. Last year the Trojans traveled to Jamestown and were downed by 59 points–but this is a new year and a new team.

The girls have put last season behind them. They have learned from it and grown. That 4-25 record does not define them but is used as motivation. It’s been a long offseason, but the season is finally almost here. The Trojan women are ready to go out and do something special, and we can’t wait to cheer them. Good luck Trojans!
