Advice for Awkward Moments with Awkward Lisa

Advice for Awkward Moments

Hey Lisa,

I’m at that point where I really need to find an Internship. But, like, I don’t even know where to start. Any advice?

Sincerely,

Jim

Jim,

The internet is your best friend when it comes to your internship search. You can try sites like Internship.com and internmatch.com. If you click on the DSU Job link, through your DSU portal, that is another great way to find internships. Additionally, if you don’t already have a LinkedIn account, I would highly suggest getting one. Through that account it is easy to track down Internships, and in some cases, employers can find you!

When searching for an Internship on-line, there’s two main approaches. You can search for internship openings, and apply for them according to what that company requires for your application. Alternatively, you can also sometimes find a company that works in your field of study and inquire to see if they perhaps would be willing to take on an intern or if there are any openings. It would be a good idea to send them your resume and examples of your work in advance. Sometimes companies might say no, but maybe that’s not the case, and sometimes they will be more than willing to open something up for you.

Always use your existing connections. Ask your professors, your family, or friends if maybe they know someone who might be willing to take on an intern. Knowing someone really can help you get your foot in the door and help you stand out amongst other applicants.

Internships are great ways to further your education and help you gain experience. I strongly recommend taking advantage of the schools resources. To prepare for actually securing your internship once you find it, you can participate in a “practice with the pros” mock interview and go into career services to make sure that your resume is top notch! Make sure to contact your advisors or professors in your field if you have questions about the field you’re going into. They are all excellent resources!
Best of luck!

–Lisa
