After beating Dordt (Iowa) 41-7 last Saturday, the Trojan’s improved their record to 2-0 for the first time in 21 years. Since I couldn’t be at the game to see DSU post their impressive 41-7 victory over the Defenders, I figured I should at least try and touch base with Justin “Football” Summers. Being an awesome dude, Justin agreed to sit down and answer a few questions for me in the following interview.

Q. Where are you from originally and why did you choose DSU?

A. I’m originally from just outside of Salt Lake City. It was clear that DSU was the right choice after I had visited a few other schools in the area. It just had the right feel and vibe.

Q.  Have you heard about the Justin Football nickname that fans have taken to calling you?

A. Yes (Laughing).

Q. What do you think of it?

A. I like it (Laughing). Johnny Manzel is a great football player.  I just don’t think I’m quite his caliber yet. We will see if fans are still calling me that halfway through the season when I’m a little more banged and bruised.

Q. Have you had any other nicknames?

A. No.

Q. You rushed for three touchdowns against Mayville and passed for three touchdowns against Dordt, do you consider yourself an all around QB?

A. Mayville kind of forced me to run. The option to run was just there and working. Dordt, on the other hand, had watched some game film and had a linebacker spy me the whole game. I had to pass against Dordt. I’d been working hard to refine my passing technique in the off-season and was ready for that. For the most part, I’d consider myself an all-around QB.

Q. I’ve seen a few people doing the we’re hungry celebration after big plays. Is that a team thing or just an individual thing?

A. It’s definitely a team thing. They started doing it last year and it carried over. Basically, we’re hungry so let’s eat. It’s one of those things we do to get pumped up.

Q. What are you doing to prepare for Valley City?

A. Valley City is always a big threat and they have a younger team this year. Our coaches have been watching game film and preparing our game plan like usual. As players, we are always working on refining our technique and trying to get better every week. We have all the assets we need to make thing happen.

Q. Is there anything you want to say to the fans?

A. We appreciate all of the their support. It’s always good to hear the fans when your out on the field. It’d be great to have a big turnout for Valley City.

With this weekend’s games being the first of a two game home stand, it would be awesome to see a large turnout of fans. It could be a very exciting football season at DSU and having a 12th man only helps out the odds. As they say where I’m from, teamwork makes the dream work.
