DSU offers Health IT Workforce Training

Submitted by Jamie Husher

DSU is participating in national efforts to increase the number of health IT workers ready and able to speed the implementation and adoption of electronic health records (EHRs) nationwide. The Health IT Workforce Development Training Program offers non-credit, workforce training available to individuals working in or transitioning to a health IT career. As graduation draws near, current DSU students may look to this training as another way to gain a competitive edge in the job market and enhance the all-important resume.

Four health IT certificates are available: HIT Implementation and Support, HIT Management, HIT Trainer, HIT Workflow Specialist. Classes are delivered 100 percent online. Students can earn a certificate in four – six months.

New classes begin on April 25, 2011 with applications due on or before April 15, 2011. Full student scholarships are available for the following certificates: HIT Implementation and Support and HIT Management (25 students each) and HIT Workflow Specialist (10 students). Once the scholarships are exhausted, special pricing is available for qualified DSU students. Future 2011 start dates include: June 27, August 29 and October 31. Students can apply and begin classes at each start date.

Students who successfully complete the required classes earn a certificate of completion from DSU and become eligible to complete a HIT Pro Competency Exam. The competency exam program serves as an independent validation of learning. Exams will be provided at no cost to the first 10,000 test takers and available in mid-2011. HIT Pro is the official competency exam of the government’s workforce development program, sponsored by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT.

Visit the HIT Training Web site to learn about each scholarship and apply. Contact Jamie.Husher@dsu.edu or stop by Lowry Hall #214 to visit with us about the training.
