Last week the College Against Cancer hosted its annual Relay for Life event at the DSU Fieldhouse.  Several clubs and organizations on campus came out to help show their support including the Student Senate, Student Activities Board, Phi Beta Lambda Business Club, Student Ambassadors, Fear the Turkey, DSU Live, Enactus, DSU Volleyball, the Lady T’s, DSU Basketball, and DSU Football.

Throughout the night, one member from each team walked around the track.  The track was illuminated by dozens of luminaries placed by people in honor of someone they knew who suffered from cancer.

This year’s theme was “Tooning out Cancer.” Each team was asked to pick a cartoon mascot for the event.  The mascots included cartoon characters from Toy Story, SpongeBob, the Minions from Despicable Me, the Looney Tunes, Garfield, and superheroes.

The night started around 5:00pm and went until 1:00am. Every team provided an activity or sold food throughout the night.  Some of the events included a photo booth, root beer pong, minute to win it, face painting, tire game, bean bag tossing, bucket ball, a balloon game, darts, bucket toss, and even voluntary head shaving. Other clubs sold food including hot dogs, popcorn, chips, cookies, and soda.

Of course, the big event at the Relay was the annual Miss DSU Pageant. They mixed things up this year by including a talent portion to the proceedings. At 10:30, we were introduced to the “lovely ladies,” at 11:15 was the talent portion, and the winner was crowned at 12:15. Some of the talents on display included burping the alphabet, playing guitar, provocative dancing, and many others.  Along with the top three winners, a new category was introduced, best talent.

When all was said and done over $5,200 was raised for cancer research and prevention.
