Friday, March 25th was an important day for the members of the Future Business Leaders of America organization, or Phi Beta Lambda.  Ten of Dakota State University’s business students attended this year’s event in Waverly, Iowa.  The Spring Leadership Conference (SLC), a workshop, seminar, and networking event, is intended to educate and inform future business leaders on solid business practices and to provide an opportunity for students to learn to meet challenges they may face in their careers in business.

The SLC is comprised of college-level Phi Beta Lambda members from Iowa, South Dakota, and Minnesota. Dakota State University students comprised 10 of the 120 total students between nine universities that attended the Spring Leadership Conference.  Within this conference are various competitions to pit students against one another for the chance to move on to the national competition. All ten of the students from Dakota State University qualified to attend the national conference with the superb job they did in these events.

Special recognition goes to Alyxz Metzinger, Justin Heubrock, and Zach Merrill, all of whom qualified in all three of the events that they participated in at the conference. Additionally, the advisor in charge of the DSU chapter of Phi Beta Lambda, Dr. Daniel Talley, was nominated and selected to receive the “Outstanding Advisor” award for 2011, an award he had received once before, in 2003.

“Although winning the Outstanding Advisor award was certainly a personal highlight,” says Dr. Talley, “I have to say the best part of the conference experience was watching our students excel in competition and participate in the conference.  Each one of them was an outstanding representative of DSU; poised and professional while engaged in conference activities and events–and supportive of each other throughout the three days we were together.  I could not have wished for a better experience for the group.”
