On Feb 3, DSU hosted a Super Bowl party with all the classics: tasty snacks, the big game on a big screen, and lots of football fans.

The evening began at 4:30 with tailgate food served in the TC, including nachos and chili cheese dogs. The main event, however, took place in the Beacom Institute of Technology. Super Bowl LIII was broadcasted on the big screen in the collaboration hall. The idea of hosting a Super Bowl party in the Beacom came from students, who then took it to the president of Dakota State. The Student Affairs team quickly jumped on the idea. Associate Vice President for Student Affairs, Jim Jacobsen, saw the value in an event like this. “We thought this would be a great opportunity to get campus together,” he explained, “It’s a chance to take advantage of the great facility.” He was correct; around 100 DSU students came and went throughout the evening, enjoying refreshments and the highly-anticipated match between the Los Angeles Rams and the New England Patriots.

Drawings for prizes were a bonus for students who attended. Students picked a team by putting their names in either a box marked “Patriots” or a box marked “Rams.” At the end of each quarter, a name was drawn from the team who was ahead, and the person whose name was pulled received a gift certificate to the Trojan Zone Bookstore. The prize for the final drawing was a MisFit Fitness and Sleep Monitor. The drawings were a huge hit; if there’s anything college students love, it’s free stuff. As Grant Vizzini, one of the prize winners, put it, “I came because I heard there were snacks. But the prize was the best part!”

Students weren’t the only ones satisfied with the gathering. “I’m impressed by the turnout,” reflected Jacobsen once the evening ended. He thinks it will likely be an annual event that the school puts on.
