Super Bowl XLVIII in a Nutshell

Super Bowl in a Nutshell

This past Sunday a couple of friends and I gathered at my buddy’s house to take part in a yearly tradition of watching the Super Bowl.  Each of us brought something to eat including pulled pork sandwiches, little smokies, chips and dip, soda, bacon wrapped jalapeno poppers, and even a cookie cake. After weeks of hype and anticipation, the day had finally arrived!

We were promised an epic battle between the NFL’s top two teams.  The fact that it was being held in New York in February meant that there was even the possibility of snow or a blizzard. We all took our places around the TV waiting in anticipating of the battle that was about to commence.  Both teams came storming out onto the field. The Broncos went so far as to even have a real white horse run out with them! This game was going to be awesome! Forty minutes later, we were wishing someone had brought a video game or something.

The Seattle Seahawks destroyed the Denver Broncos 43-8 in Super Bowl XLVIII.  Unless you were a Seahawks fan or hate the Broncos, it was a very boring Super Bowl for the causal viewer and football fan. After a botched snap on the first possession of the game led to a safety, the game quickly went south for the Broncos.  By halftime, the Seahawks were up 22-0.

The Broncos became the first team since the beginning of the Super Bowl to not score any points in the first half of the game. They finally scored a 14 yard TD to WR Demaryius Thomas in the 3rd quarter. They even went on to get the two point conversion.  Still being down by 28 points, the game was almost all but over.

Other highlights from the game included Seahawks WR Percy Harvin’s 87-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, Russell Wilson’s two TD passes, and Marshawn Lynch’s 1-yard TD run.

Not to worry though, right? At least there was always the commercials! Unfortunately, this year had very few memorable commercials.  Many companies, such as Bud Light and M&M, over hyped and promoted their commercial in the weeks leading up to the game. Being over hyped, When they premiered they were a huge letdown.  Mostly the commercials were just not that funny or memorable. There were a few exceptions of course, but they were few and far between.

Bruno Mars did a serviceable job for the halftime show. Mars sang his hit songs Billionaire, Locked out of Heaven, Treasure, Runaway Bride, and, in a tribute to the U.S. Armed Forces, Just the way you are.  The Red Hot Chili Peppers even joined Mars to sing Give it Away. Compared to the past few years, Mars’s halftime show was rather simple, if not particularly spectacular.

Seahawks LB Malcom Smith was named Super Bowl MVP. He grabbed and returned a 69-yards for a touchdown in the second half. In another spectacular Seahawks moment, he recovered a fumble. Smith is the first defender to win MVP in 11 years. He is also only the 3rd linebacker to win MVP after Ray Lewis with the Baltimore Ravens in 2001 and Chuck Howley with the Dallas Cowboys in 1971.  It was a nice change of pace since in 48 Super Bowls 26 of them have named the quarterback as MVP.

Overall, this was one of the more uneventful Super Bowls in recent memory. Congratulations to the Seahawks on their first Super Bowl and good luck next year.
