Trojan Softball Crushes Saints

The women’s softball team has had a lot of action this past weekend and this week. The Trojans started off by playing a 4 game road series up in Valley City as they took on the Vikings. The Trojans were swept in all four games. The score of game one was 12-0. In game two, the Trojans lost 10-3. Game three was the closest of all four of the games, with a score of 5-1. In the final game of the road trip the Trojans were mercy ruled in 5 innings with a score of 10-2.  These four losses dropped the Trojans to 9-6 and 0-4 in the DAC.

On Tuesday April 5th, the Trojans took on the Sioux Falls cougars. The Trojans dropped both games in the double header with scores of 9-5 in the first game and 9-7 in the second. These two losses dropped the Trojans to 9-8 overall.

Wednesday the 6th the Trojans took on Presentation in a double header at Thue Softball Complex. The Trojans won both games. This snapped the Trojans six game winning streak and improved their record to 11-8.

Within the first game, the Trojans jumped out to and early lead when Jesica Alcala hit a triple in the bottom of the first inning, and later scored on a RBI double by Ashley Stevenson. In the bottom of the third inning Alcala came back to bat to hit a 3-run in the park homerun which put the Trojans up 4-0.  The saints cut down the Trojans lead to two runs, but DSU rallied and scored seven runs. After that the Trojans pulled away to a 16-2 lead to end the game at an 8-run mercy rule. The Trojans hit seven doubles in game one. Jesica Alcala went 3-4 with 5 RBIs and was just shy of a double to hit for the cycle.

In game two the Trojans came out hot in the first inning again putting up two runs off a 2-run single by Emily Kulp. In the bottom of the third Ashley Stevenson was hit by a pitch and stole two bases. Emily Kulp hit her in with a single. Jessica Mclane hit an RBI double to score Kulp on the following at bat, making the score 4-1. The Trojans stayed hot with the bats and extended the lead to 6-1 and held it to close this one out. The Trojans had 6 different players who had two hits in the game.
