Trojans and Lady T's Defeated on Hawaiian Night

The Dakota State women’s and men’s basketball teams both faced their tough rival Black Hills Saturday night. The women’s team kicked off Hawaiian night against the #7 ranked lady Yellow Jackets.

The Lady Trojans have struggled at the start of conference play with a record of 1-3. From the start of the game the lady Trojans were having trouble taking care of the ball on offense. Black hills came off to a hot start going on a 13-4 run at the beginning of the first half. The Trojans went down 33-18 at half time.

At the beginning of the second half, the lady Trojans struggled shooting from the field. The lady yellow jacket’s got hot and ran away with this one in the second half finishing the game with a convincing win with a score of 72 to 41. DSU shot 28% from the field and gave up 24 points off of turnovers.

Julie Munson was the leading scorer for the lady T’s with 10 points and Kylie Westover added 9 points. The lady Trojans fell to 5-11 on the year and 1-4 in the DAC conference. The yellow jackets moved to 15-3 and 5-0 in the conference.

The men’s team looked to snap their 3 game losing streaks against the #6 ranked yellow jackets in the second game of the night. The men’s team was in pursuit to upset the yellow jackets in Madison, for the second year in a row.

Both teams traded leads at the start of the first-half. With 8 minutes left in the first half BHSU went on a 24-8 run, shooting 63% percent from the arc. The half-time score was 44 to 28. In the second half the Trojans scored 35 points to BHSU’s 37 but failed to get some defensive stops to help cut down the half-time lead.

The Trojans fell to the yellow jackets with a score of 81 to 63. DSU’s Jesse Bean had 15 points in the first half. Santino Clay added 14 points and grabbed 7 rebounds; Bryce Snyder had 12 points and bringing down 7 boards. The men’s teams extended their losing streak to 4, falling to 9-9 overall and 1-4 in the conference. While BHSU moved to 16-3 overall and still undefeated in conference play at 5-0.

On Friday January 21, the Trojans and Lady T’s will travel to North Dakota to take on Jamestown College then Valley City on Saturday.
