Trojans Baseball Team Has Improved Season

This year is has been a big turn around from last year’s baseball record. They have improved in all aspects of the game. Their discipline at the plate was very consistent and their fielding increased tremendously from last year. It has been a long season for the Trojans that will be coming to a close in the next couple weeks.

This past weekend the Trojans traveled down to Sioux City to take on Briar Cliff. They split the series, BC took the first game with a score of 5-3 and DSU edged out the second game in a close one with a score of 7-6.

In the first game the Trojans fell behind early on a defensive error.  In the top of the third inning the Trojans grabbed at 3-1 lead on their straight RBIs. After this inning DSU was unable to score the rest of the game and Briar Cliff added two more runs to secure the victory, 5-3.

In the second game Jason Hershfield hit a two-out RBI double to score Anyelo Roman to grab a 1-0 lead. Later on Ryan Bourcier hit a solo bomb to go up two.

In the bottom of the fourth the chargers tacked on five runs to take the lead 6-5.

In the final inning Anyelo Roman hit a solo homerun to tie the game 6-6. After a balk that moved Ryan Steffenson to third, Bourcier hit a sacrifice fly to score Steffenson and take a one run lead. The Trojans bullpen slammed the door in the last inning to seal the 7-6 win.

Some of the top batting leaders for DSU is Jason Hershfield who has a .277 average, 13 homeruns and 36 RBIs. Anyelo Roman who is betting .362 with 14 HRs and 41 RBIs.

“We have vastly improved from last year. We are building a foundation that the baseball team can build off of and go to new highs in years to come.” Said senior starting pitcher Seth Doxey.

The Trojans will be wrapping up their season with three more double headers to try to get into the A.I.I. tournament in San Marcos, California.
