Saturday night the Dakota State Trojans took on the Mayville Comets in an old DAC rivalry. DSU snapped Mayville’s 4 game win streak. They won the game with a score of 81-61. This win moved the Trojans to a 2-0 on the season.

On Tuesday night the Trojans took on No. 7 in the nation, Northwestern (IA). The Trojans had the Red Raiders up against the ropes for most of the game until a late second half surge from Northwestern pushed it to overtime. The game went into double overtime, becoming and instant classic. DSU just did not have enough left in the tank in the second overtime to pull this one out. This 99-90 loss dropped the Trojans to 2-1 on the season.

In the first half, the Red Raiders came out playing fundamentally sound basketball, taking an early 15-6 lead. The Trojans stuck around in the game gaining their first lead after they scored 13 straight points. DSU stayed tough battling with Northwestern and took a 38-32, halftime lead.

In the second half the Trojans grabbed two, ten point leads. Late in the second half the Raiders started lighting it up from the arc and went on a 15-5 run. The Raiders kept this hot streak going as they led 74-68 with 2:51 left in regulation. The Trojans answered back with a 7-0 run, with Spencer Adams hitting a 3-pointer to give the DSU a 1-point lead with about a minute left in the game. Northwestern came down and hit a quick jumper to put them back on top with a 1-point lead. Donald “Ducky” Stewart was fouled and sent to the line and made 1 out of 2, tying the game at 76-76. Northwestern missed a 3-pointer on the following possession to send the game into overtime.

Donald Stewart goes up for two!

The first overtime, both teams traded leads. The Raiders pulled away with a 83-80 lead when Stewart hit an NBA range 3-pointer to tie the game up with 1 second left on the clock. DSU grabbed an early two-point lead when Jesse Bean knocked down 2 free throws. After that NWIA scored 5 straight points to take the lead. The Raiders then hit 7 straight free throws in the bonus to take the win.

“Coach (Garner) has been telling us since day one, that our defense is going to win us games. I believe they scored sixteen points and we had seven, that’s not gone get it done.” said Donald Stewart

Bean scored 23 points and had seven assists for the Trojans. Stewart had 20 points. Spencer Adams had 16 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and recorded three steals. Jordan Snyder had 11 rebounds for the Trojans.

DSU will look to bounce back with the Ed-Harter Classic this weekend.
