The baseball team traveled to Valley City to take on the Vikings in a four-game road trip. The men struggled in the first two games as they lost 13-3 and 22-5 in the second game. On the second day the Trojans lost the first game 6- 5 and the second game 8-5.. These four losses dropped the Trojans to a 1-19 record and 0-4 in the DAC.
“We started off slow against valley…the first day we were not there mentally. The second day, we were ready to play, just being a few plays and a few hits away from winning both of them. The pitchers are turning it around and we are having better approaches at the plate,” said Seth Doxey
After the rough weekend up in Valley City, the Trojans returned back to Madison for a double header against Briar Cliff in their home opener. In the first game Briar Cliff jumped out a 2-0 early lead. But in the bottom of the fourth Dakota State scored off a Jake Weier single and scored two more when Kyle Braun hit a 2-RBI single to give the Trojans a 3-2 lead. In the top of the 5th BC tacked on two runs to take the lead 4-3. Braun led off the bottom of the 6th with a single, then was moved over by a sac bunt by Beau Behrend. Following that play, Chaz Palmer got an infield single to load the bases. Briar Cliff recorded another error off the bat of Jamie Barbour, scoring Braun from third and tying the game 4-4. Next Ryan Steffensen hit a RBI single scoring Behrend and Palmer to extend DSUs lead 6-4. The Trojans would hold the lead to take this one as BC left 2 runners on base in the final inning.
In game two Chaz Palmer started on the mound and gave up two runs. Connor Hargrove came in relief and gave up two runs as well. The Trojans bats ran cold in the second game, by only scoring off a solo shot by Max Garza in the bottom of the 6th. However, Garza’s HR wasn’t enough to give the Trojans the spark they needed to rally back as they lost this one 4-1.
