DSU Embraces Community with 3rd Annual Day of Service
Sometimes it’s nice to be reminded that college students enjoy the community that they live in, and to most of Dakota State’s population, Madison is home so to show our appreciation for this little town, we have DSU Day of Service.
Last Wednesday, April 25, we were lucky enough to get a break from the hectic weather taking over most of our new year to go outside and enjoy a day of bettering our community, cleaning up the parks and streets, and helping those who need it.
This year DSU compiled 32 different projects that students and teams could sign up for, ranging from food drives to painting fire hydrants around Madison and the event was projected to have over 450 volunteers eager to spend a beautiful day helping the community.
One of the projects available was city park clean-up, which DSU’s Resident Assistants participated in. The group split up into two teams, cleaning parks in Madison of garbage and rubble in and around the play areas, on the soccer fields and baseball diamonds, and near the roads.
According to Haley Asimakopoulos, an education student and Resident Assistant, “DSU’s Day of Service encourages the community to look at our town and see what could be done to improve it…” she says, “it is important to show the Madison community that we, as college students, do care for Madison.”
This year’s Day of Service also hosted a tree planting ceremony in honor of Susan Vaughan, a Madison member who passed away last month. The Redbud tree is planted just outside the Karl E. Mundt Library, here on campus.
DSU’s 3rd annual service event yielded fantastic results in volunteers and service projects and if you want to learn more about service projects throughout the year you can check the school and club/organization calendar.
