Advice for Awkward Moments

Lisa,

So, I got a job offer for this summer, which is great, I guess, but it’s not my first choice. I’m waiting on another place that I really want to work at, but they’re a lot slower and are still reviewing applications, while the company I received the job offer has only given me a few days to accept or reject the offer. I can’t decide! What should I do?

Dear Mike,

Quite an awkward moment indeed! The first thing you’re going to want to do is contact the company that you’re still waiting to hear back from. It’s best to be open and honest with both companies. Let the one that you got the offer from know that you are waiting on another offer. You can ask for more time to decide, but most likely they won’t give you too much time, because they have other candidates that are waiting on a reply. As for the company that you’re still waiting on, let them know that you have a job and let them know when you have to let them know by. Ask if they would be able to give you an answer by that date. It’s possible that they may be willing to expedite the process for you especially if you are one of their top candidates. However, considering they may still have other people to interview, they will want to give all the candidates a fair chance and may simply respond saying they simply can’t give you an answer at that time. They may give you some kind of indication as to whether or not you’re in the running for it which could help guide your decision. And if they can’t give you an answer, you’re going to have to decide what kind of person you are. If you’re a risk taker and feel confident you can get the second job, then you could turn down the first. If you prefer to play it safe, then take the one that is for sure. When it gets down to it, it’s still really great to have multiple opportunities, but the pressure of decisions can be very stressful. Also make sure to figure out what is best for you, and your future, and consult wise people in your life, such as your parents or your adviser.

Best of luck!

Lisa
