HuNe Wins Student Senate Election but Gets Votes Nullified
Last night, April 12th, the votes for the Student Senate Election were counted. Hunter Brindley and Nelofar Sultan (HuNe) won by a purportedly large margin. Early reports indicate that the student senate voted to nullify their win so that Brindley and Sultan were unable to become president and vice president. This was reportedly due to voter solicitation by both candidates. One action the Senate defined as solicitation was the placing of posters in residence halls and cards on dorm room doors encouraging residents to vote for them. Students are observing that it is extremely common to receive information via posters and cards in the dorms, including slips of paper placed on or slid under dorm room doors encouraging one to attend CRU meetings or to buy Krispy Kreme Doughnuts for various athletic fundraisers. So solicitation has not historically been an issue for student clubs and athletics. We are investigating whether the rule clearly applies to election materials.
The winning candidates of the election have yet to be announced .
Supporters of Sultan and Brindley have created a petition at ipetitions.com in an effort to generate a clear avenue to reinstate the negated votes and therefore the two candidates.
We have reached out to Vice President for Student Affairs/Dean of Students, Marcus Garstecki as well as Brindley and Sultan and about the situation. This article will be updated as soon as new information arises.
