Last week on April 4, The Alliance held its annual drag show. Although there were only three contestants in the competition this year, each had a lot to offer during their performance on stage. Here’s your chance to learn a bit more about them.

 DSU Drag Show Contestants

Liz Klett as Tiberius Rex

Winner: King and Best Choreography

Q: Why did you choose to perform?

A: “I got into it after watching RuPaul and I was also inspired by a Drag King that I know in Miami who performs and I thought, ‘I want to do that’.”

Q: How was performing?

A: “I was nervous before and during the performance. I had done acting before so I just tried getting into character but my mouth was still dry, and I was super nervous.”

Q: How did you come up with your stage name?

A: “I had thought about it, but I was hoping it would just come to me. When I was on my way from Christmas break, which was a 10-hour drive, the name came to me about 3 hours away from campus. I swear I almost had an aneurysm once I figured it out.”

Zach De Peitro as Shenita Dee

Winner: Miss Congeniality and Most Heartfelt

Q: Why did you choose to perform?

A: I went to Pride in Minneapolis and saw the Drag Shows and I thought I might give it a try.

Q: How was performing?

A: “I was nervous beforehand, like a couple hours leading up to it, but once I started putting on makeup and getting ready I was like, ‘I can do this’. Then, I got up on stage and saw how many people were there but I still knew I could do it.

Q: How did you come up with your stage name?

A: “I used a random name generator and just chose the one that reflected me the most.”

Andrew Field as GG

Winner: Queen Fierce and Best Makeup

Q: Why did you choose to perform?

A: “I had gotten into makeup a while ago and this was a production where I could put my skills to use. I had never had the resources to do that before and the Alliance gave me the wig, the stage, and the opportunity to show my skills so I couldn’t pass the opportunity up.”

Q: How was performing?

A: “It was really nerve-wracking before when I saw how many people were there. Right before was probably the worst because my hands were shaking and I had to remember how to breathe; but once I got up there and my song started, there wasn’t a worry in the world and I just went up there to rock it.”

Q: Did you expect this big of a crowd?

A: “They had told us that there never was this big of a crowd, but I had told my friends and they had told me that they were bringing their friend groups. There were people from my first semester classes who were coming too. When I talked to someone in charge, they said they had counted roughly 80 people.”

Q: How did you come up with your stage name?

A: “I was just trying to think of what would be a good stage name, and originally I was thinking GG Gorgeous but I thought that might sound too cocky. I ended up with just GG because it was straight to the point and ‘Yes’.”
