DSU Student Senate Notes
February 13, 2013
The regular weekly meeting of Dakota State University’s Student Association Senate was held on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at 8:00 pm in the Regents Room. All officers were in attendance. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved.
Senator D. Miller moved that Senate create a DSU Compliments ‘friend’ on Facebook as a way for students, faculty, and staff to provide anonymous compliments to their peers, and that this be the duty of the Public Relations Officer to maintain. The motion was seconded and carried.
Senator Verhey suggested an idea that the students of the university develop and adopt an integrity statement as a way to distinguish themselves. Senate D. Miller moved to table this issue for now. The motion was seconded and carried.
The Senate is looking into getting recycling containers placed in the Community Center.
Senator Boyte expressed a student concern about the university’s new policy that will require events taking place on campus on a week night to end at midnight. Senator Verhey moved to table this issue until the March 20, 2013 Senate meeting to allow more time to hear student feedback. The motion was seconded and carried.

January 30, 2013
The regular weekly meeting of Dakota State University’s Student Association Senate was held on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at 8:00 pm in the Regents Room. All officers were in attendance. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved.
Senator Valdez moved that the Senate oppose SD Senate Bill 177. The bill, if passed, would prevent universities from prohibiting individuals from carrying guns on campus. The motion was seconded and carried 16-0. The results of the roll call vote are included at the end of this document.
The meeting adjourned at 8:38 pm.
January 23, 2013
The regular weekly meeting of Dakota State University’s Student Association Senate was held on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at 8:00 pm in the Regents Room. All officers were in attendance except Administrative Assistant Miller and Finance Chair Merrill. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved.
The Senate discussed various topics that are relevant to its trip to the state capitol in Pierre on Jan 27-28 for Students in Higher Education Days, including the School Sentinel Act and Senate Bill 177.
The Senate reviewed their goals for the year and are in the process of forming an execution plan to accomplish them.

January 16, 2013
The regular weekly meeting of Dakota State University’s Student Association Senate was held on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at 8:00 pm in the Regents Room. All officers, with the exception of the Finance Chair were in attendance. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved.
The Senate’s Smoking Policy Committee is discussing with Keith Bundy the possibility of using the old early alert system as a ticketing system. They are also discussing with Pat Keating whether or not workers from the Physical Plant could act as ticket issuers.
Senator D. Miller moved to amend the Senate Constitution to allow for tardy with notification to and approval of the executive team via email. The motion was seconded but failed.
Senator D. Miller moved to refer the above issue to the Senate’s Constitutional Review Committee. The motion was seconded and carried.
Senator D. Miller moved that the Senate donate $1,000 to the Lost and Found organization, a national Suicide Prevention and Awareness group that was started at USD. The motion was seconded and carried.
The meeting adjourned at 9:02 pm.
