The basics: A few How-Tos to get started at DSU
Getting started as a freshman at a college can be overwhelming sometimes – intimidating at worst. But it does not have to be that way; rather, it should be exciting and seamless. To aid in the process, I want to share a compilation of few How-to that I think will be essential to new students, and before that, let you know we are very excited to welcome you guys to the Trojan family.
How to join clubs? (Or create one)
Before I tell you anything, the best way to do it would be to attend the Club activities fair on Tuesday, August 23rd, on West TC Lawn, where there will be booths for all the clubs associated with DSU with their representatives. If you cannot attend, this is the tentative list of all the clubs and organizations we have in campus, and you can reach out to them through their Discord channels. This Discord server has all compilation of the discord servers for most of the clubs, if not all. Clubs and organizations are one of the best way to connect with people with similar interests and, most importantly, have fun. And if you want to start your own niche club, you can do that too, with the possibility of funding from the General Activity Board. Check out this link for more information.
How to get access to Counselling Center, Private tutors, Advisors…?
Having a set of support system to thrive in college is very quintessential. DSU provides a network of professionals or student peers who can help you with academic planning and student success, mental well-being, or private tutoring sessions. There is a all-in-one stop for you access these people and that would to download: “Navigate Student” app in your phone and login with you DSU credentials. More information can be found in this page.
How to get into Research?
Can I get involved in Research as a freshman? Yes, you absolutely can! In fact, I got fundings from school as a fresher to do my research, including a faculty mentor. I also know several other people who are getting their hands dirty on different types of projects as a freshman or sophomores. You will also gather lots of opportunities to present your research at conferences and seminars. DSU fervently supports an initiative called SRI (Undergraduate Research Initiative). To get approved for the program and the funding, you will need to have a faculty mentor. The economic and research center of DSU will soon roll out an email for instructions on how to approach this.
