Trojans Compete in First Track Meet of the Year

The Dakota State Trojan track and field team competed in their first meet of the new year this weekend at the South Dakota State D2 Invitational at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex in Brookings. It was a solid meet for both the men and women teams, both of who hadn’t competed in over a month after their meet last weekend was canceled due to the weather.

The women’s team had several solid performances. Traia Hubbard had a huge meet for the Trojans. She was able to throw the shot put 13.49 meters, a throw that surpasses the NAIA ‘A’ Standard national qualifying mark. The mark made her the top NAIA thrower in the event as well as broke the school record. She also hit a personal-record in the weight throw with a throw of 14.76 meters that placed her 15th in the event.

Other throwers that competed in the meet included Tyra Payne who placed 24th in the shot put with 9.53 meters and 30th in the weight throw with 13.32 meters. Jobi McCreary placed 30th in the shot put with a throw of 9.18 meters and 22nd place in the weight throw with 14.07 meters. Going into the meet, Trojan throwing coach Coach Glover was excited to watch his throwers compete. On the women’s side, he was hoping for big improvements over the offseason. The girls did just that.

The women’s team raced well on the track as well. Ashley Robinson placed 5th in the 3000-meter run with a time of 11:21.21. Jada Anderson finished closely behind in 6th place with a time of 11:21.82, and Juliette Rios placed 20th with a time of 13:14.51.
