January 2026 Basketball Round-up
Dakota State’s men’s and women’s basketball teams have been busy this month as they navigate the jump to their first season in the 12-team Frontier Conference. All home games are played at the DSU Fieldhouse. Here’s a rundown of what’s happened so far in January and what’s coming up next for both teams.
Men’s Basketball
January didn’t start off easy for the Trojan’s men basketball team as they lost two close games in Montana. DSU fell 82-81 at Caroll on Jan 2 and dropped a 48-45 decision the following night at Rocky Mountain. The Trojans bounced back the next weekend in North Dakota, picking up a 71-55 win over Bismarck State. They followed again with a hard fought 78-74 victory at Dickinson State. Nathan Ojukwu and freshman Lukas Morgan led the way offensively during the road swing.
Back in Madison, DSU split its home games. The Trojans came up just short against Montana Tech on Jan 16th, losing 68-66 on a late three-pointer. Two days later, DSU responded with a dramatic 75-73 comeback win over Montana Western, highlighted by Morgan’s career-high 29 points and Ojukwu’s game-winning basket. DSU followed that up with a home game against Bellevue on Jan 23rd, but Bellevue pulled away in the second half for a 71-54 win.
The Trojans finish this month on the road with conference games at Valley City State on Jan 30th and Mayville State on Jan 31st.

Women’s Basketball
The DSU women also opened January on the road against Frontier opponents. Despite strong performances from junior Tabor Teel, including a double-double at Carroll where she scored her 1,000th career point, the Trojans dropped close games to Carroll and Rocky Mountain to start the month.
DSU quickly rebounded in North Dakota, earning dominant wins over Bismarck State (92-82) and Dickinson State (90-50), Teel continued to lead the way, supported by strong contributions from Caitlin Dyer, Bria Wasmund and Angelina Chapple.
Back in Madison, the Trojans stayed hot with convincing home wins over Montana Tech and Montana Western. Those victories pushed DSU to 16-3 overall and kept the team undefeated at home in this season.
The Trojans dominated Bellevue on Jan 23rd, winning 89-41. DSU forced 26 turnovers and had four players score in double figures, led by Tabor Teel’s 18 points and 11 rebounds. Caitlin Dyer scored 16 points, and Ella Carstensen added 15 points. The win gave the women their fifth straight conference win.

Both teams wrap up January on the road in North Dakota. The Trojans travel to Valley City State on Friday, Jan 30th, with the women scheduled to play at 5 p.m., followed by the men at 7 p.m. DSU then heads to Mayville State on Saturday, Jan 31st, with the same starting times.
