As the holiday season settles over Madison, campus becomes quieter as many students head home to their families. However, for DSU’s international community, “home” is often thousands of miles away. Bridging that distance with open arms, Dr. Justin Schroeder continued his heartwarming tradition of hosting a Thanksgiving dinner for international students at his house.

The motivation behind the gathering is personal. Dr. Schroeder shared stories with the group about his own time living in Europe. He recalled the specific feeling of missing out on traditions back home. He wanted to ensure that DSU students never felt that isolation. He simply wanted to make the students feel at home.

The warmth was palpable from the moment guests arrived. Around 25 students were greeted enthusiastically by Dr. Schroeder’s young daughters, his son, his wife and his parents, who helped create a welcoming, multigenerational family atmosphere.

The dinner itself was a delicious blend of cultures. Dr. Schroeder took a moment to explain the history and significance of the American holiday, thanking everyone who helped organize the event. In turn, students brought a piece of their own heritage to the table. The feast featured a variety of homemade dishes from different countries, allowing everyone to taste global flavors alongside traditional Thanksgiving staples.

After the meal, the evening turned to fun and relaxation. Students and the Schroeder family bonded over board games, filling the house with laughter.

It is a meaningful gesture for Dr. Schroeder to host us every year like this. It reminds us that even though we are far from where we grew up, we have a place here to just enjoy the moment. It really felt like being in our own home.
