Student-led Honors Council launches lecture circuit

Graduation marks the end of college, but what comes next? DSU’s student-led Honors Advisory Council opened its new Honors Lecture Circuit on Sept. 15 with a talk centered on that question.

Brian Matherly, CIO of Viaflex International, was the first speaker for the 2026–2027 series. The event took place in EH100 at 7 p.m. and was open exclusively to Honors students.

The circuit aims to connect students with local business leaders and experienced professionals who can help them apply what they learn in Honors to their careers. The lectures add to the program’s activities alongside its monthly social events.

Matherly’s talk, “Your Story Doesn’t End at Graduation,” drew on his career journey from entry-level computer science work to executive management. Its theme encouraged students to look beyond degrees and job titles and consider how their experiences shape who they become. Academic projects, an Honors thesis and an internship can all help build the skills, curiosity and judgment students carry into their next chapter.

Viaflex also sponsored pizza for the event.

Following the lecture, the council shared an anonymous, four-question survey asking students for feedback on the event and the broader Honors experience. That input will help guide future programming.

The council’s goal is straightforward: make Honors something students are excited to participate in. The lecture circuit creates another opportunity for students to connect, ask questions and think about where their education can take them.
