Trojans Run Well at Dordt Invitational
The Dakota State track team had a good first meet after returning from Christmas break. The Trojans traveled to Sioux Center, Iowa to join 14 other teams in the Dordt Invitational. Highlights from the day include All-American Seth Boomsma qualifying for Nationals in the 55m dash and two DSU throwers breaking school records.
In the 55m dash, Boomsma won his preliminary with a time of 6.46. Helping him win the event and sending him to NAIA Nationals for the 2nd consecutive year, he improved his time to 6.32 in the next race. His achievements were also good enough to earn him his first ever NSAA Runner of the week. In the same race, Spencer Carlson finished 15th with a time of 6.69. Marty Hargrove finished 22nd with a time of 6.74. Sophomore D’Artist Williams finished 23rd with a time of 6.75. Rounding out the list of Trojans, Trevor Jacobsen finished 29th with a time of 6.8.
Two DSU throwers set new school record in the weight throw at the Dordt Open. For the men, Ryan Gimbel continued to break DSU and personal records in the weight throw. He threw a measurement of 51 feet for a third-place finish. Fellow Trojan Trevor Van Tilburg finished eighth with a throw of 45 feet and 11.25 inches. For the women, Shayna Dwyer set a new DSU school record in the weight throw. She recorded a measurement of 44 feet and 5.25 inches for a 10th-place finish. Ashley Currey finished 11th in the event with a measurement of 42 feet and 7.5 inches. Kelci Viesselman finished 27th at 35 feet and 11.5 inches.
In the men’s shot put, Gimbel finished tied for eighth with a measurement of 44 feet and 7 inches. For the women, Currey threw a measurement of 33 feet and 3.25 inches to earn a 19th place finish. Viesselman finished 25th with a throw of 32 feet and 2 inches and Dwyer finished 26th at 32 feet and 0.25 inches.
Michael Hoffman ran a time of 9:13.49 to earn a fifth-place finish in the men’s 3000-meter run. Taylor Hauge finished 17th with a time of 9:41.64. Michael Carson recorded a time of 9:55.52 finishing 24th. Rounding out the list of Trojans, Caleb Hemphill finished 43rd running a time of 10:42.16.
Carson clocked a time of 5:02.12 for a 27th-place finish in the men’s 1-mile run. Hemphill placed 33rd with a time of 5:19.95.
Two Trojan men’s runners placed in the ‘Top 15’ in the 800-meter run. Steve Selchert ran a time of 2:01.81 to finish seventh and Jared Sutton placed 13th with a time of 2:06.13.
All American Mark Moeller recorded a time of 1:24.88 to earn a ninth-place finish in the men’s 600-meter run. Jared Truman finished 17th with a time of 1:29.44 and Brandon Knutson finished 23rd with a time of 1:32.67.
Heather Dearing and Elizabeth Atkins each recorded a tenth-place finish tying in the women’s high jump. Both recorded a height measurement of 4 feet and 9 inches.
In the men’s 55-meter hurdles, David Sotir finished 11th in 8.52 seconds. Edward Clark finished 16th with a time of 8.65 seconds.
Two DSU women’s middle distance runners finished in the ‘Top 15’ at the meet. The 4×800 record holder, Victoria Sopko, placed 12th in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:47.78. Kayla Sveen finished 13th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:37.87.
Anastasia Gentles ran a time of 12:39.43 to finish 13th in the women’s 3000-meter run.
Five Trojan men’s runners ran in the 200-meter dash. Jacobsen clocked a time of 23.76 seconds for a 23rd-place finish. His teammate Williams finished right behind him with a time of 23.82 seconds finishing 24th. Carlson finished 29th in 23.99 seconds. Hargrove finished 35th in 24.19 seconds. Rounding out the runners, Sotir ran a time of 24.53 seconds finishing 42nd.
Mitch Trestrail finished 33rd in the men’s 400-meter dash with a time of 55.98 seconds.
Sara Friesen finished 31st in the women’s 55-meter dash with a time of 8.13 seconds and 42nd in women’s 200-meter dash with a time of 30.71 seconds.
The men’s 4×400-meter relay team – consisting of Trestrail, Selchert, Truman and Moeller – ran a time of 3:39.29 to finish 16th. The other DSU 4 x 400-meter relay team Clark, Taylor Hauge, Sutton, and Knutson finished 23rd in 3:47.73.
Dakota State will travel down to Wayne, Nebraska this Saturday to compete in the Wildcat Open on their unique 160 meter track.
