Changes at The Queue – Kalamata

Whether it’s a quick stop between classes or a cozy dinner hangout after a long day, The Queue has always been one of the most dependable food spots at Dakota State University. Known for its casual atmosphere and mix of hearty meals, it’s where students grab burgers, sandwiches, and fries while catching up with friends or going through their assignments.
Now, Fall 2025 brings a fresh twist to the menu, quite literally. The Queue has introduced Kalamata at The Queue, a Mediterranean-style concept serving bold, vibrant flavors right in the heart of campus.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, students can build their own Mediterranean bowl or pita packed with options like falafel, naan, chicken shawarma, rice, roasted veggies, hummus, and tzatziki. Every bowl feels like a mini flavor adventure, letting students mix and match sauces and toppings to create something new each time.
“I was skeptical at first,” said a student, who stopped by between classes. “But honestly, it’s fire. The falafel’s crispy, the sauces are great, and it’s way lighter than the usual stuff. I’ve already been here three times this week.”

The setup itself has transformed a corner of The Queue into something fresh and modern. Behind the counter, warm golden lighting reflects off trays of colorful ingredients — purple cabbage, chickpeas, roasted peppers, and spinach — offering a welcome change from the usual cafeteria palette. The smell of garlic and grilled pita fills the air, adding a little Mediterranean flair to the DSU dining scene.
What students seem to appreciate most, though, is the balance. Kalamata offers a healthier option for those trying to avoid heavier meals, while still being satisfying enough to keep you full through afternoon classes. “It’s nice to have something that’s not just fried,” said one of the RA. “I actually feel good after eating here — and the portions are perfect.”
Alongside the new addition, The Queue also rolled out extended hours, reopening from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with a separate evening menu. The late-night lineup features favorites like cheeseburgers, grilled chicken sandwiches, cheese curds, and fries — perfect for students who miss the main dining hall’s dinner hours or want something fast after evening labs or practices.
“I think it’s one of the best moves Sodexo has made,” said a student. “Sometimes you just don’t want to walk off campus or wait for delivery. The fact that I can grab a burger or fries right here is super convenient.”

Originally planned to stay open until 9 p.m., The Queue adjusted closing time slightly to 8:30 p.m., citing staffing balance and student employee schedules. While a few students expressed disappointment at losing the extra half hour, most understood the change.
“It’s a good compromise — and honestly, 8:30 still feels late enough,” said a student
Beyond the food, The Queue continues to act as a social hub for DSU students. On any given evening, you’ll find friends sharing fries over laptops, athletes grabbing a bite after practice, or international students introducing each other to their favorite sauces. The addition of Kalamata has only strengthened that sense of connection — bringing a mix of global flavor and community warmth to the campus dining scene.
Whether it’s a quick Mediterranean lunch or a laid-back burger dinner, The Queue has managed to stay true to what students love most: good food, good company, and convenience without compromise.
Between the Mediterranean bowls, extended hours, and classic comfort foods, The Queue continues to evolve with student needs — offering convenience, flavor, and campus comfort all in one place.
