So the weather has finally warmed up, and we’re holding our collective breath that we’re not going to get another blizzard or more sub-zero temperatures. It’s a beautiful South Dakota day, what are you going to do with it? What is there to do in Madison on a spring day, anyway?

Well, as a Madison native, I can tell you there’s a surprising amount of options. First of all, Lake Herman State park has lots of things to do! There are several hiking trails, including my personal favorite, the Abbott Trail. It’s short trail through the trees that feels like something out of a fantasy movie. The road is about 3 miles and is ideal for biking or jogging, and there are canoe and kayak rentals, and a popular frisbee golf course.

Speaking of frisbee golf, the Lake Herman course isn’t the only one in town. On the east side of town there’s a course at Baughman Park, and on the northwest side there’s… believe it or not… Northwest Park, which also has a small course.

There are other parks to check out in Madison too, within easy walking distance of DSU. Just south of campus on Egan Ave is Memorial Park, which always has beautiful flowers in the spring, a view of the creek and a pretty gazebo. North of campus is the Gerry Maloney Nature Area, which is quiet and has a tree-lined path perfect for getting away from homework for a while!

The city of Madison hosts several sports leagues for adults through the community center, currently there is a men’s basketball league playing. Baughman Park also has soccer fields which are often available for use.

Spending time in downtown Madison is always fun too. Sundog Coffee has an outdoor patio and great coffee, smoothies and food. There are also plenty of shops to check out. I particularly recommend 4 Seasons, which is full of antiques, used books and movies, and other interesting things!

Madison may be a small town, but there are still many recreation options, particularly in the spring when you want to spend time outdoors. Try something new this week!
